Caveolae structure and function

چکیده
Studies on the structure and function of caveolae have revealed how this versatile subcellular organelle can influence numerous signalling pathways. This brief review will discuss a few of the key features of caveolae as it relates to signalling and disease processes.

Cavin 1 function does not follow caveolar morphology.
The function of caveolae, small invaginations of the plasma membrane, remains a matter of debate. We discuss endocytosis and compartmentalization of metabolic and signaling pathways. Caveolin 3 (CAV3) and polymerase I and transcript release factor (PTRF) are important proteins that ensure shaping of caveolae in muscle cells. We investigated caveolae morphologically by electron microscopy in myo...
متن کاملSheath Cell Invasion and Trans-differentiation Repair Mechanical Damage Caused by Loss of Caveolae in the Zebrafish Notochord.
The notochord, a conserved axial structure required for embryonic axis elongation and spine development, consists of giant vacuolated cells surrounded by an epithelial sheath [1-3]. During morphogenesis, vacuolated cells maintain their structural integrity despite being under constant mechanical stress [4]. We hypothesized that the high density of caveolae present in vacuolated cells [5, 6] cou...

Plasmalemmal caveolae are a membrane specialization that mediates transcytosis across endothelial cells and the uptake of small molecules and ions by both epithelial and connective tissue cells. Recent findings suggest that caveolae may, in addition, be involved in signal transduction. To better understand the molecular composition of this membrane specialization, we have developed a biochemica...
متن کاملUltrarapid freezing reveals that skeletal muscle caveolae are semipermanent structures.
Rat myofibers in the resting state and under imposed conditions of moderate to severe physiological, pharmacological, and mechanical stress were prepared by ultrarapid freezing and examined by freeze fracture. In rapidly frozen rat myofibers, caveolae morphology and distribution were found to be unchanged by brief or prolonged rest, brief direct electrical stimulation and concomitant contractil...
متن کاملCaveolae protect endothelial cells from membrane rupture during increased cardiac output
Caveolae are strikingly abundant in endothelial cells, yet the physiological functions of caveolae in endothelium and other tissues remain incompletely understood. Previous studies suggest a mechanoprotective role, but whether this is relevant under the mechanical forces experienced by endothelial cells in vivo is unclear. In this study we have sought to determine whether endothelial caveolae d...
